School pays respects to teacher who committed suicide

CYNTHIA WAN

Students and teachers from a Kwai Chung school attended a funeral yesterday for an award-winning teacher who killed himself while suffering from stress.
Yeung Yiu-shing, 42, had taught at Lingnan Dr Chung Wing Kwong Memorial Secondary School for 21 years. He took his life in Sha Tin this month during a period of leave to recover from stress.
The school was closed yesterday as 300 students and staff paid tribute to Yeung at a Buddhist ceremony at the Universal Funeral Parlour in Hunghom.
The hall was adorned with flowers and banners, one of which praised Yeung as "a great teacher". Some students broke down as they walked around the coffin.
Afterwards, the president of the Professional Teachers' Union, Cheung Man-kwong, said: "It's very sad. Teachers, especially the devoted ones, are under tremendous pressure."
Yeung was described by colleagues and students as "well-liked, devoted and hard working". He is survived by his widow and teenage daughter, for whom the union is setting up an education fund.
