Overseas break best for Tung

CHRIS YEUNG

Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa said he spent his last holiday in San Francisco and not in Hong Kong - as tourism officials are urging more locals to do - because he wanted a complete break from his usual routine.
"I do want to spend my holidays in Hong Kong. But you know, there are so many newspapers to read and television news [bulletins] to watch here. I don't think I can have a real break.
"Many of us do sometimes take a day off [here]," he said.
In the past few years, Mr Tung has taken holidays in San Francisco, where he has a home, and several places on the mainland.
He managed a short break in San Francisco last month while in the United States for his first White House meeting with President George W. Bush.
Tourism Board chairwoman Selina Chow Liang Shuk-yee said it was hoping to promote the concept of domestic tourism by publicising local attractions.
"Many people do not know there are lots of attractive places in other districts," she said.
Commissioner for Tourism Rebecca Lai Ko Wing-yee lamented that Hong Kong people always kept abreast of new sightseeing and entertainment spots in other countries, but had little idea of what was on offer locally.
