Pollution blankets Island, Kowloon
Air pollution on Hong Kong Island and Kowloon on Monday rose to the highest levels in almost nine months.
The Air Pollution Index (API) readings at the roadside stations ranged from 121 to 131 at 3pm, which indicated a Very High Air Pollution Level, according to the Environmental Protection Department. Earlier readings had reached a choking 148.
Pollution levels in Central reached 131, Causeway Bay 127 and Mongkok 121. The highest ever recorded pollution levels occured on March 29 last year in Central, with a reading of 174.
The department warned people with heart or respiratory illnesses to stay away from areas with heavy traffic for a prolonged period and avoid physical exertion as far as possible.
